Some companies which are selling silent PC are trying to convince you the noise is making you sick. This is not true in our opinion, but when you are working all day long next to a noisy PC and you replace it with one of Unikum PC you will certainly notice a difference and you can concentrate better on your work.
Even more important is, that a passive cooling solution and the usage of SSDs, allows you to have a truly solid state PC with no mechanical moving parts at all. This reduces the possible points of failure in the PC by a big margin as the electronical parts are not prone to wearing out like mechanical parts.
Due to the fact that all components are submerged in silicon oil, all individual parts gets cooled and not only the main components like in a traditional system. Submersion cooling is usually only used for supercomputers or high end servers. It is the method of choice when raw performance with no compromises is required. Unikum PC uses this advantage to boost the performance of the passive cooled PCs even more. As two fans are used to circulate the oil, it is not fully passive by definition anymore, but as the fans are fully submerged they do not emit any audible noise. This allows up to 850 watt continuous system power. What is enough for a extreme performance workstation with two Xeon E5-2699 V3 (18 cores / 36 threads, 2.3 GHz, 145 watts) and two Nvidia Titan X (3072 cuda cores, 12 GByte VRAM, 250 watts).
By definition, a passive system does not consume energy to achieve its functionality.
Passive (air) cooling works like traditional air cooling. Cold air passes by the fins of the heat sinks and gets heated up. But instead of a noisy fan, passive cooling relies on natural convection to circulate the air.
Oil can cool the components in the same way as air does. But as it has a much higher heat capacity, This means oil can cool much more effectively. But as the hot oil does not get replaced permanently with fresh cold one like air does, it needs to be cooled to maintain its cooling potential.
This is done with heat sinks embedded into the walls. Therefor the oil is performing a highly performant heat transfer bridge between the internal components and the main heat sinks of the system.
It does not only cool the main components like CPU and GPU but also the RAM, voltage regulator modules (VRMs) as well as the chipset.
The silicon oil used is not conductive and does not short the electrical circuits like water would.
Unikum PC only use pure silicon oil. It is chemically highly inert and does not react with human skin and is not harmful. Due to the low surface tension, the oil can cover a large surface of the lung when extensive amounts enter the lung. However, this scenario can’t happen during reasonable usage of the PC.
Silicon oil does not dissolve rubber unlike mineral oil.
Every one of the three or four main system heat sinks has a surface area of approximately 1.5 m2. They have a thermal resistance below 0.1 K/W. This means they have to heat up only 25°C over the ambient temperature to dissipate 250 watts.
Thy systems are carefully designed and tested to prevent all components from thermal throttling even if all of them are stressed with synthetic benchmarks and an ambient temperature of 30°C. However, it is unlikely that all components are stressed simultaneously to 100% of their rated wattage and the average temperature is significant lower.
Every PC uses about 40 kg worth of aluminium heat sinks. Due to the big thermal capacity they change the temperature slowly and the thermal stress when changing the load of the components is reduced.
